Vaccination against Covid-19 reduces the risk of death, especially after booster doses.

The article “Clinical-epidemiological characteristics and survival of cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) due to Covid-19, according to the Covid-19 vaccination schedule in Brazil, 2021-2022: a prospective study” , by Martins Neto and colleagues, researchers from the Federal University of Maranhão, was published in the journal Epidemiology and Health Services: SUS Journal (RESS, vol. 32, no. 4).

This study analyzed the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, as well as the survival of individuals with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) due to COVID-19, based on information from the COVID-19 vaccination schedule in Brazil in 2021 and 2022. During this period, a higher proportion of vaccinated individuals were observed among females (15.0%), the elderly ≥ 80 years (34.5%), and those in the Southeast region (15.7%). Statistical analysis showed that those not immunized had a higher risk of death, regardless of age group.

The study demonstrated the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination in the survival of cases of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) resulting from the disease, through the use of survival tree models. The analysis showed that the application of the booster dose of the vaccine was associated with increased survival in all age groups, reinforcing the evidence of the impact of vaccination in reducing the risk of death in patients with the severe form of the disease.

Regarding the implications for services, the high number of hospitalizations due to severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) among unvaccinated individuals stands out, leading to an increased demand for hospitalizations in health services. The National Immunization Program (PNI), an essential pillar in the prevention of various diseases through vaccination within the Unified Health System (SUS) network, played a decisive role in guaranteeing the universal supply of the vaccine in a country of continental dimensions like Brazil, despite all the difficulties faced during the pandemic period.

It is imperative to guarantee the universal and regular supply of vaccine doses to the various population groups, as well as to improve strategies to combat the anti-vaccine movement and vaccine hesitancy.
