The Journal of Epidemiology and Health Services: SUS Journal (RESS) incorporated new features in 2024 to increase the transparency and rigor of scientific communication. Highlights include the new article format and the pioneering publication of peer reviews alongside the articles.
New article template
The first major change is visual. RESS has redesigned its entire article template, adopting a more modern design . This change not only improves the aesthetics of the articles, but also makes reading and navigation more intuitive and enjoyable for readers, ensuring that essential information is highlighted.
· Ethical aspects: the ethical aspects appear on the first page, in a specific box where all relevant information is clearly indicated in each field;
· Declaration regarding the use of artificial intelligence: authors must declare in the article whether they used artificial intelligence in the preparation of the manuscript, clarifying how they confirmed the accuracy of the citations and the originality of the content, since the authorship belongs to the authors themselves, even with the use of these tools;
· Protocol registration: For systematic reviews and clinical trials, authors must provide protocol registration information, indicating the repository name and registration number;
· Availability of article data: authors must inform the reader where the research data can be accessed by making a statement about access to the research data (databases, codes, methods, and other materials used and resulting from the research).
· Compliance with open science: all editorial staff – and also reviewers who agree to this disclosure – are identified along with their ORCIDs. The Open Researcher and Contributor ID provides the reader with greater transparency regarding those responsible for managing the manuscript. If authors and reviewers so desire, there can be direct interaction in an open peer review process. The link to published reviews also appears on the first page.
Publication of opinions:
RESS has begun publishing reviewers’ reports alongside scientific articles. This initiative – a pioneering one among journals in the SciELO Public Health collection – is a first for the journals in the SciELO Public Health collection. – It promotes greater transparency in the peer review process, allowing readers and researchers to better understand the considerations and criteria that led to the approval of the papers. This practice significantly contributes to the credibility and reliability of RESS’s scientific publications.
The changes implemented by RESS in 2024 not only reinforce its commitment to innovation and quality, but also place the journal in a prominent position on the national and international scientific scene. The adoption of a more modern model and transparency in the publication of peer reviews are important steps for the evolution of scientific publications in Brazil. This measure, implemented at the end of 2024, is a preparation for 2025, when all articles in the journal will be in this new format.
