The article Self-rated health according to sex and associated factors in Manaus, 2019: a population-based cross-sectional study , published in vol. 33, no. 1 (2024) in Epidemiology and Health Services: SUS Journal (RESS), analyzed the prevalence of poor self-rated health, according to sex and factors associated with this outcome, in residents of Manaus, Amazonas state, in 2019.

The study was conducted on a population sample of 2,321 individuals. Self-rated health was reported as poor in 35% of participants and was associated with age over 60 years, food insecurity, and the presence of comorbidities. Females showed a higher prevalence of poor self-rated health. Reported morbidity and access to food were variables associated with this outcome.

The research was developed by researchers from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and the University of Brasília (UnB), based on a population-based cross-sectional study in 2019. The results presented reinforced the evidence of an association between gender-related inequalities and self-rated health. This work can contribute to the planning of public policies related to health promotion in the most socially vulnerable groups.

The authors emphasize the need for research investigating self-reported health status, including clinical or laboratory data, to provide better evidence on the magnitude of the effect of inequality on vulnerability conditions in the general population.
