Cervical cancer is a preventable disease and vaccination against HPV is one of the main prevention strategies. Northeast Brazil ranked second among the country’s regions in absolute number of deaths and mortality rate due to this disease in 2020. However, HPV vaccine coverage was below the target for both sexes in the region, with the exception of the states of Ceará and Paraíba.

Pernambuco, especially the state capital Recife, recorded high mortality, having the third highest rates in Brazil in December 2020. Analysis was performed on cases of SARS due to COVID-19 registered at the Pernambuco Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance in Pernambuco, via the “Notifique Aqui” electronic system.
