Cervical cancer is a preventable disease and vaccination against HPV is one of the main prevention strategies. Northeast Brazil ranked second among the country’s regions in absolute number of deaths and mortality rate due to this disease in 2020. However, HPV vaccine coverage was below the target for both sexes in the region, with the exception of the states of Ceará and Paraíba.
Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the leading public health problems and cause of deaths due to infectious diseases worldwide. In Brazil, recommendations made by the National Plan to End Tuberculosis were established in 2017. Although Brazil has achieved successful results towards ending TB, the reduction in case notification is still insufficient to meet national and global goals.
In 2020, Northeast Brazil had the country’s second highest COVID-19 death rate. Pernambuco, especially the state capital Recife, recorded high mortality, having the third highest rates in Brazil in December 2020. Analysis was performed on cases of SARS due to COVID-19 registered at the Pernambuco Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance in Pernambuco, via the “Notifique Aqui” electronic system.
The Brazilian Journal of Epidemiology (Revista Brasileira de Epidemiologia – Epidemio) and Epidemiology and Health Services: journal of the Brazilian National Health System (Epidemiologia e Serviços de Saúde: revista do SUS – RESS) have published a joint call for thematic papers on epidemiological surveillance, communicable diseases and neglected diseases. Papers can be submitted between August 9 and 21.
The SciELO in Perspective website has published the press release entitled “Records of accidents involving venomous animals have become more complete in recent years”. The study was based on notifications recorded on the Notifiable Health Conditions Information System (Sistema Nacional de Agravos de Notificação – SINAN) for the period 2007-2019, and its classification of completeness of the notification form fields ranged from excellent to very poor.
