During the 17th edition of the National Exhibition of Successful Experiences in Epidemiology and Disease Prevention and Control, held in Brasília from November 7 to 10, attention turned to the presentations of the finalist studies submitted for the 12th edition of the RESS Evidencia Award.

Three researchers stood out: Sheila Paloma de Sousa Brito, with her article Mortality due to neglected tropical diseases in Piauí, Northeast Brazil: Temporal trend and spatial patterns, 2001-2018; Rosália Garcia Neves, author of the article Adequacy of care for people with hypertension in Brazil: National Health Survey, 2013 and 2019; and Caroline Madalena Ribeiro, with her article Short-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer screening, diagnostic investigation and treatment procedures in Brazil: A descriptive study, 2019-2020.

On November 8, the studies were presented at one of the event’s exhibitions, dedicated to the Award. Each researcher had 30 minutes to present their work, providing event participants with the opportunity to assess and reflect on researchers’ respective contributions.

The criteria for choosing the winner included the relevance of the study, clarity and objectivity, reasoning and scope of research, reproducibility of results and applicability to Health Surveillance actions.

The final decision was revealed at the event’s closing ceremony, on November 10, and named Sheila Paloma de Sousa Brito as the winner of the 12th edition of the RESS Evidencia Award. Her research on mortality due to neglected tropical diseases in Piauí was recognized as a notable contribution to epidemiology and disease prevention in the Brazilian context.

The RESS Evidencia Award continues to play a crucial role in encouraging the production of relevant and quality knowledge in the field of epidemiology and disease prevention in Brazil.
